Jennifer Yokoyama, PhDJennifer Yokoyama, PhD

Associate Professor & Principal Investigator
UCSF Department of Neurology

[email protected] | UCSF Profile

Dr. Jennifer Yokoyama is a geneticist and neuroscientist who is interested in understanding how variation across the genome contributes to changes in structure and function as the brain ages. As an Associate Professor in the UCSF Departments of Neurology and Radiology & Biomedical Imaging and the Mary Oakley Foundation Endowed Professor in Neurodegeneration, she oversees the Neurogenetics in Aging lab at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center.

She received her PhD (2010) with Dr. Steven Hamilton in the Department of Psychiatry and Institute for Human Genetics at UCSF. For her dissertation, Jennifer conducted genome-wide association studies of canine noise phobia and adult-onset deafness. During postdoctoral training at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center (2011-2014), Jennifer conducted neuroimaging and genetics studies of cognitively healthy aging adults and adults with C9ORF72 frontotemporal dementia.

Jennifer joined the UCSF Memory and Aging Center in the Department of Neurology as an Assistant Professor in 2014. She then joined the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging as an Assistant Professor in 2019. Now an Associate Professor, Jennifer continues to direct the independent research program, New Innovations: NeuroGenetics in Aging (NINGIA). This lab studies the effects of genotype on brain physiology, affect, behavior, and cognition in healthy older adults, and how this is related to increased vulnerability to, or protection from, neurodegeneration in diverse populations.

In her free time, Jennifer enjoys eating good food and spending time with her family.
